For the past several seasons, the Independence Day holiday weekend has meant one thing: there’s gonna be a BIG event for the 600cc and 270cc Micro-Sprints at Lanco’s Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway! From the Super 600 Showdown to Micromania to a high paying PA 600 Speedweek show, not to mention the eventual addition of the 270cc Clash at the Clyde, the weekend prior to or just after the Fourth of July has produced a lucrative and exciting racing program on the banked oval in Newmanstown, Pa.
And there’s good news, race fans…2014 will see another big bucks holiday blowout of motorsports mayhem at the Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway!
July 5 is the date for the inaugural Firecracker Frenzy for the 600’s, and the methanol breathing, clay spewing, winged wonders will be joined once again by their 270cc brethren as they compete in the fourth annual Clash at the Clyde.
With 40 or more cars per class, each A-Main will pay a hefty $1,000 to the winner, while a fifth-place finish could be worth $400 (based on 45 or more cars; that’s more than many tracks pay to win the feature) and $100 to take the green (based on 30 or more cars). The “take the green” figure will go higher if the number of entries climbs to 45 or 50 or more.
Non-qualifiers in the B-Main will also be paid.
There is no pre-entry for this event; racers simply need to show up on July 5, pay the $50 car entry and $25 for a pit pass, and go racing.
The 600cc Micros will compete in a dual heat race format with passing/finishing points awarded. Drivers will draw for their starting positions in the first round of heats; the lineups will be inverted for the second round of qualifying races.
And here’s a neat little twist…after both rounds of heats have been completed, the top 12 in points will run time trials…but not your ordinary, one-car-at-a-time run against the clock. Lanco officials are taking a page from this year’s highly successful and popular “knockout time trials” employed by NASCAR.
The top 12 in qualifying points will take to the track in the first knockout session, with the six fastest cars moving on to round two. The times recorded in the second round will determine the top six starting spots in the A-Main, with positions seven through twelve lining up according to their times in round one.
Drivers in the 270cc Clash at the Clyde will also draw for starting positions in their heat races, with just a single heat race format scheduled for the 270’s. There will be a redraw for top starting spots in the Clash at the Clyde among the top finishers in the heats.
Sponsors are lining up to support this event, with lead roles being taken by Hollinger’s Sports & Turf; Hyper Racing; Dayton Parts; and Wayne Lesher IV, Inc. Design Build.
Negotiations are underway with additional sponsors, and, with an event as large as Firecracker Frenzy/Clash at the Clyde, there is always room for businesses and individuals who would like to participate and have their name(s) associated with a race such as this; one that is sure to be a favorite of both racers and fans.
Those negotiations for added sponsorship, if fruitful, will provide some significant financial bonuses to the drivers. Stay tuned for upcoming Firecracker Frenzy/Clash at the Clyde news releases for updates regarding additional sponsorship and exactly what that will mean for the entrants.
Pit gates will open at 3:30 on Saturday, July 5, with Grandstand gates unlocking at 4:30 p.m. Pill draw ends and the driver’s meeting begins at 6:00, with warm-ups following at 6:15. The first heat race goes green at 7:00.
